1873 $5 ( Closed 3) Proof 65 Ultra Cameo NGC/CAC

Total mintage of this date is a mere 25 pieces with just 15 believed to still exist. NGC and PCGS combined have certified 3 with 1 higher. It is our belief that at least one or possibly both of the other Proof 65 Ultra Cameo's are duplicates and one of those is now in the proof 66 holder. With Motto $5 Gold Proofs between 1866 and 1879 are extremely rare. NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 12 pieces in Proof 65 Ultra Cameo and just 7 in Proof 66 Ultra Cameo while from 1880-1908 high grade pieces are far more available. In addition to being a great rarity this also carries the Garrett pedigree. Historical records indicate that this particular piece appears to have been purchased directly from the Mint in 1873 by Foster Ely of Elyria, Ohio, according to correspondence in Appendix I of the Garrett I Auction. In the 2008 edition of the book Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins: 1795-1933, 'The number of coins certified by the major grading services can be ignored for [the proof 1873 Half Eagle], as they are highly inflated by resubmissions. It is the authors' experience that the 1873 half eagle is just as rare as the issues of the previous few years.' In other words, there are probably no more than 15 proof 1873 Fives extant in all grades, at least two of which are impounded in museum collections and, as such, and not available for private ownership.
